What's Up Wednesday

Welcome to What's Up Wednesday, a weekly meme run by Erin L Funk and Jaime Morrow.

What I'm reading

I finished The Way of Kings, which is the longest book I've read since A Game of Thrones! Despite the daunting page count, it's a gripping read, one I'd recommend to fantasy fans. I also read The Faerie Prince and The Faerie War, books 2 and 3 in the Creepy Hollow series, and I really enjoyed them!

Now I've just finished reading One by Leigh Ann Kopans, which is an awesome take on superpowers! I can't wait to read the sequel, Two.

What I'm writing

I've been carrying on with my YA Urban Fantasy draft...while resisting the siren call of a shiny new idea. I had some free time the other day so I went back to the outline I was working on for my next project...and turned it into a trilogy. Then a few nights ago, the entire opening scene for the first book played out in my head when I was trying to sleep, so I ended up writing it down. So now I have two series rocketing around in my head...plus the one I need to revise...

I'm also signing the contract for Darkworld Book 3 today! *Yay!*

What inspires me right now

Cute baby animals. And shiny new ideas. ^_^ Also, as I've said before, the awesome online writing community. As a certain article in the last week has shown, it's easy to lash out in envy of other, more successful writers, but that kind of negativity is self-defeating. Better to be supportive of fellow writers rather than trying to bring people down! Amy Trueblood has a great blog post on focusing on the positives!

What else I've been up to

I've been really busy with freelance work and critiquing.  I also blogged on Tangled Up In Words about my habit of accidentally starting books vs being scared to start writing...

I also watched The Hobbit again, which is always awesome. :)

Also, I'm going to Iceland in October!!!!! (The country, not the supermarket :P) I'm crazy-excited already about getting to see the Northern Lights, something I've wanted to do forever! ^_^

  1. I read the Creepy Hollow series last year, and I loved it! I'd had the first one on my Kindle for ages before I read it, too, I can't believe I waited so long.
Jealous that you're going to Iceland! I bet the Northern Lights are beautiful.

  2. Looking forward to checking out that Amy Trueblood post. Focusing on (and appreciating!) the positive is something I'm really working on this year. Thanks so much for sharing on it. Hope you have a wonderful week, Emma!

  3. Congrats on the Darkworld #3 contract! And good luck with your dueling SNIs too. I feel like that is an exciting problem to have. To many stories in your head, how will you know which one to write.

Have a good time in Iceland. I know you aren't leaving for many months, but I'm still excited for you. Iceland has been high on my places I want to go list ever since I was a kid. Yellowstone is super stinky and I expect the cool geological parts of Iceland are too, but I'm still captivated by the idea of a hotspot on a spreading ridge. Okay, I'll stop geeking out about geology now. Have a great trip.

  4. shiny new idea are so distraction. Sometimes I give in and write a page or two to get it out of my system until I finish my current project. I've wanted to read One for a while. I love superhero books!

  5. I'm tempted to give THE WAY OF KINGS a try... but maybe after I've caught up with the GAME OF THRONES series... so that might be a while (I only recently purchased book 2!)... :)

Envy/jealousy at others is so counter-productive, and soul-destroying. I know there are writers out there more talented than me. I also know there are writers whose work is more commercially viable, and seem to be making great strides in their careers. That's wonderful for them. But that's not my path. I'm the writer I am, and rather than waste energy coveting the skills and success of others, I'd much rather do the best I can with what I've been given.

Ooo... Iceland! I'd love to go to Scandinavia sometime... either Finland or Iceland sound wonderful. I'd forgotten there was a frozen supermarket chain of that name in the UK... *sigh*... I remember where the Iceland was in Hull. I even shopped there a few times when my poor-student funds permitted. :)

    Have a wonderful week, Emma!

  6. Congrats on the contract!

I also have like 300 ideas, some more complete than others, swirling in my head. Sometimes I feel like I'm going to explode. If only I could write as fast as I can come up with stories lol

Oh, gonna read that post by Amy Trueblood right now.

    Have a great week :)

Love the Hobbit. And I think the second one comes out on DVD soon which I'm psyched about.

  9. I suppose having too many ideas bouncing around in your head is better than none, right? Though, it can definitely be tough to sort through all of the ideas and narrow it down to the one you're supposed to be working on. It sounds like you're making great progress on a number of projects, so that's awesome.

My husband has a Northern Lights alert set up on his phone. Unfortunately, the red alerts always seem to pop up when it's overcast here. Oddly, despite living in a part of the world that gets the Northern Lights fairly frequently, I still have yet to really see them. I hope you get to see them, too, in Iceland!

  10. Iceland?! That ain't no joke. Sounds awesome. I'd really love to make it to that part of the world one day.

  11. I'm so jealous you're going to see the Northern Lights! That's going to be amaaaazing! (And the rest of Iceland, too, I'm sure :)

I've stopped paying attention to any of the YA/NA/romance/fantasy/author/everything-in-the entire-world bashing articles that are always popping up. They're totally not worth wasting any energy on--energy we could all be using on writing or…looking at cute baby animals :)
