What's Up Wednesday

Welcome to What's Up Wednesday, a weekly meme run by Erin L Funk and Jaime Morrow. Here's what I've been up to this past week!

What I'm reading

I read Pantomime by Laura Lam, which was absolutely fantastic - I'm now reading the sequel, Shadowplay. Totally unique YA fantasy!

I also read Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews, an urban fantasy that's been on my Goodreads list for over a year. I really enjoyed it, and I'm going to have to pick up the rest of the series at some point!

What I'm writing

I'm still Camp NaNo-ing away with my YA post-apocalyptic sequel (while the first book is in the hands of three other readers! *eek*). :) I've not yet reached the dreaded sink-hole in the middle where the story starts disobeying my outline, so the hard part lies ahead...for now, I've been enjoying re-acquainting myself with the characters and the world. And preparing to torment my poor characters in the next 60,000 words. *evil laugh*

What inspires me

Dare I say...this book? I had one of those wonderful days yesterday where I just typed 2000 words without getting discouraged or distracted. Those days are rare at the moment, which made it doubly precious.

What else I've been up to

Freelance work, editing for Entangled, answering a never-ending heap of emails, beta reading and critiquing... Not much else! It's been another challenging week with a fair few disappointments, so I've been trying not to dwell on things and just get on with what I can actually control...which is the words on the page.

  1. I was looking at Laura Lam's books on Goodreads just the other day, they have beautiful covers if nothing else!

It sounds like Camp NaNoWriMo's going well for you so far. :) I'm considering using NaNo in November to write a very, very rough draft of the sequel to my current WIP, but I have to finish novel #1 first! :s Good luck with the rest of NaNo!

    1. Thanks! :) That sounds like a good plan! I've yet to actually "win" NaNo, so I might give it a go this year.

  3. I love it when the words just flow off your fingers onto your keyboard. When they just come easily, and make 100% sense. Congrats!

  4. 2000 words plus all the other stuff you're doing? Fantastic. Savor these days and remember them on those days when nothing seems to work. Writing is definitely a roller coaster ride.

  7. You're the second Emma to recommend the PANTOMIME series, and now I think I really need to read it. I think it's fantastic that you're inspired by your progress on your story. Those stints of writing without feeling stressed are the best. I can feel myself slowly getting to that point again. Here's hoping there's no sink-hole to worry about in this story. Maybe you won't have to worry about that this time around. Hope you're having a great week, Emma!

  8. Sorry I'm so late commenting, I had a half-written comment then I got sidetracked. D:

PANTOMIME is so good! I'm glad you enjoyed it. :D It really is something fresh to the YA scene.

I'm so glad the writing is going well. :) Balancing it all with freelance and editing must be hard, I can't even keep on top of my beta reads!

    1. I think I like Shadowplay even more! :)

Thanks! I'm falling behind with beta reading, though. Looking at manuscripts all day (mine and other people's) makes it hard to get the energy together to read even more! But I'm slowly catching up. :)

  11. Ha! I love how you put this: "the dreaded sink-hole in the middle where the story starts disobeying my outline." I can totally relate on that, especially with the WIP I'm working on now. Days when the words flow without distractions or discouragement are the best. I'm so glad to hear you had one of those inspiring writing sessions! They make it worth it! Have an awesome week working on your Camp NaNo project!

  15. I read Magic Bites a few years back. I'm incredibly behind on the series, but I remember loving books #2-3 more than #1!

And LOL, tormenting characters is always the most fun thing ever, yeah? I think so, at least... >:P

  16. You're keeping quite busy at the moment, Emma! I'm glad your novel is inspiring you--that's always a good feeling, and certainly not something we expect in the throes of writing/editing. :)

All the best with all you have going on this week!
