What's Up Wednesday

It's time for What's Up Wednesday, a weekly meme run by Erin L Funk and Jaime Morrow. Here's what I've been up to this past week!

What I'm reading

I read Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone, an inventive steampunk-esque fantasy novel with some seriously original worldbuilding!

I also read Sin by Sharron Riddle, a fantastic YA urban fantasy with a great magic and mythology system - highly recommended!

And I read Dead New World by Ryan Hill, an action-packed post-apocalyptic YA novel with zombies, and Heirs of War, a fantastic high fantasy by Mara Valderann which I was lucky enough to win in a giveaway.

What I'm writing

I'm still NaNo-ing away with Shiny Book 3! I also finished the last beta revisions on the first book.

And I FINALLY finished Darkworld 3 edits and sent them back to my editor!

What works for me

Last week I talked about how I get inspired by reading books in the same genre as I'm writing. Well, part of that involves pulling apart what I read to see what makes it work. I'm an English Literature graduate, so it goes with the territory. :P

And if I read a book I truly love, then I'll analyse it to figure out why. By keeping an eye out for the things that appeal to me as a reader, I'm looking at how I can write books that have the same effect. (I hope, anyway!)

What else I've been up to

On Sunday, I met up with Cole and Sophie in London for book shopping and coffee and writer-talk! ^_^

Other than that, I've been preparing for my upcoming release! Only five days until Fear's Touch: A Darkworld Novella hits the virtual shelves! *eek!*

  2. I'm an English Lit graduate too, so I know exactly what you mean! I can't read a book without dissecting it, but like you said, this is good for my own writing :)

  3. As a writer, I think we do tend to read books with a different mind-set. Although I don't have an English Lit degree (and love the idea of really dissecting), I catch myself thinking 'why did they do that now?" or 'this plot should be moved here and this revealed here'. Even TV shows are falling victim ;)

  4. I also read books with a different mindset. I once read an advanced copy and wrote a 2 page editorial letter. WHOOPS. I guess I got too carried away there lol.

  6. Nice job on finishing your revisions for book one! I'm sure the finished product is awesome! Glad to hear NaNo and book three are coming along well! You've been SO busy this summer and fall! You should plan a great reward for yourself. Have a super week, Emma! :)

  7. I feel much the same way about reading in the same genre and picking apart what you liked. The same could be said about picking apart what you didn't particularly like too. (For your own personal use, of course.) I find that helps me figure out what not to do in my own WiPs.

Congrats on finishing up your beta revisions! Best of luck with the next lag of NaNo! :D

  10. I think writers read books the way chefs eat food. :) Doesn't stop us from enjoying really good books though (or really good food)

Hope you have an amazing week and happy NaNo-ing (you can say that in a Mork and Mindy voice if it makes you feel better) ;)

  11. You are, quite possibly, the most prolific person I "know". I'm so impressed with everything you get done! I'm still writing the same book I was writing when I found WUW...Nanowrimo should be a piece of cake for you!
